Haven society

How does Haven Society make a difference in Nanaimo?

Haven Society provides services for close to 4,000 women, children youth and families who have experienced violence in the Greater Nanaimo area every year and are seeking support to recover from physical, sexual and psychological abuse and violence

  • Every single day, we answer an average of 8 crisis calls from women and children needing immediate safety and assistance
  • At any given time, close to half clients in our Transition House (TH) are children
  • Every year, we are forced to turn away close to 100 women and their children seeking shelter and safety at the TH due to lack of space – last year the TH ran at capacity for 203 days
  • Close to 2,000 clients in our active Community Victim Services files are considered high-risk – meaning they are at a high risk to life and limb
  • Our counselling, victim services and outreach programs help ensure women and children can recover and go on to lead healthy lives free from violence – which makes a profound difference to the cultural, economic and community viability of Nanaimo
  • 94% of every dollar donated to Haven Society goes directly to programs and services rather than overhead, and every dollar can literally be life-saving

What are the immediate needs of Haven Society?

Our immediate needs are ensuring women and children have the access to the help and support they need when they need it:

  • Reducing waitlists – currently women can wait up to a year for one on one counselling, and children can wait for several months to see a Children Who Witness Abuse Counsellor
  • Ensuring the Transition House is fully functional and operational – covering needed repairs and upgrades to facilities
